Immigrant Parents as Literacy Supporters (IPALS) helps parents prepare their children for school. ​Jia and her partner came to the IPALS program because of concerns related to their children’s success in Canada. The Canadian education system is very different from that in China; in China, students are expected to simply listen to the teacher with little interaction. Education in China also involves repeated writing, reading, memorization, and homework that can be quite difficult and overwhelming for young children. IPALS introduced this mother to Canadian ideas about education. Most significantly, the program taught the family that learning can be fun. The family has been able to expand on this understanding to their everyday lives. While on walks, the children will say aloud the house numbers or letters from street names and can readily understand traffic signals. These types of activities are done together and have truly changed Jia’s perspective on learning and life in general in Canada.
